Soft engineering case study-
The river Quaggy-
Located in - Lewisham -(2004)
Previously hard engineering methods were put in place in 1970, this involved methods such as widening the river channel and channel straightening. These methods were ineffective so the a do nothing or more environmentally friendly approach was adapted. Also the river Quaggy had a flash flood regime. (which is The variability in its discharge throughout the course of a year in response to precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration, and drainage basin characteristics)
This environmentally friendly approach made improvements to the local environment, whist preventing floods. Also as time went on a park was made on lower land to prevent flooding and also flood pains were reintroduced and a soft engineering method of natural storage was put in place. (the parks capacity for holding water is around 35 Olympic swimming pools) .
This scheme prevented the flooding of 600 businesses and homes.
